Usually a campus includes libraries, lecture halls, residence halls and park like settings. The definition currently describes a collection of buildings that belong to a given institution, either academic or non-academic. The word derives from a Latin word for “field” and first was used to describe the grounds of a college at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) during the 18th century. Some other American colleges later adopted the word to describe individual fields at their own institutions, but “campus” did not yet describe the whole university property. A school might have one space called a campus, one called a field, and another called a yard. The meaning expanded to include the whole institutional property during the 20th century, with the old meaning persisting into the 1950s in some places. Sometimes the lands on which company office buildings sit, along with the buildings, are called campuses. The Microsoft Campus in Redmond, Washington, as well as hospitals use the term to describe the territory of their facilities. The word “campus” has also been applied to European universities, although most such institutions are characterized by ownership of individual buildings in urban settings rather than park-like lawns in which buildings are placed.

Convocation 2012 https://msmphysicaleducation.org/convocation-2012/ https://msmphysicaleducation.org/convocation-2012/#comments Mon, 08 Sep 2014 11:56:37 +0000 http://msmphysicaleducation.org/convocation-2012/ In some universities, the term ‘convocation’ refers specifically to the entirety of the alumni of a college which function as one of the university’s representative bodies. Due to its inordinate size, the Convocation will elect a standing committee, which is responsible for making representations concerning the views of the alumni to the university administration. The convocation also, however, can hold general meetings, at which any alumnus can attend. The main function of the convocation is to represent the views of the alumni to the university administration, to encourage co-operation among alumni (esp. in regard to donations), and to elect members of the University’s governing body (known variously as the Senate, Council, Board, etc., depending on the particular institution, but basically equivalent to a board of directors of a corporation.). In the University of Oxford, Convocation was originally the main governing body of the University, consisting of all doctors and masters of the University, but it now comprises all graduates of the university and its only remaining function is to elect the Chancellor of the University and the Professor of Poetry.

A Classroom https://msmphysicaleducation.org/a-classroom/ https://msmphysicaleducation.org/a-classroom/#comments Mon, 08 Sep 2014 11:56:37 +0000 http://msmphysicaleducation.org/a-classroom/ Everyone is welcome here. If you’re a professor, teacher, or student within the college community, we encourage you to use Wikipedia in your course to demonstrate how an open content website works. Many of these projects have resulted in both advancing the students’ knowledge and useful content being added to Wikipedia. An advantage of this over regular homework is that the student is dealing with a real world situation, which is not only more educational but also makes it more interesting (‘the world gets to see my work’), possibly resulting in increased dedication. Besides, it will give the students a chance to collaborate on course notes and papers, and their effort might remain online for reference, instead of being discarded and forgotten as is usual with paper coursework, or classroom systems which are routinely reinitialized. We offer some best practices guidelines to support educational and academic projects.
